After having defected to the West, a Soviet scientist has developed a new weapon that would change the world, the Shagohod missile system, but he was sent back as part of a deal within the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now the West wants him back, and Naked Snake, the man who would one day become Big Boss, goes to rescue him. However, the legendary soldier (and Snake's mentor), The Boss, defects to the U.S.S.R., and the renegade Soviet colonel that she now serves explodes a nuclear weapon against his own countrymen. The Soviet leaders blame the U.S. for the nuclear attack and threaten retaliation unless the U.S. can prove its innocence in the matter. A deal is made between the East and West: the U.S. must assassinate The Boss and her team of WWII rogue veterans (the Cobra Squad), eliminate the Soviet colonel and his rebels, rescue the scientist once again and destroy the prototype Shagohod within one week or risk a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Seen as being responsible for letting The Boss get away, Snake must complete the mission or he and his support team will be executed for failing in the original operation and letting the nuclear war begin. Parachuting alone into the treacherous jungle, Operation: Snake Eater commences. In 1963 Naked Snake, soon to be Big Boss and father a Solid Snake, infiltrates the Russian jungle to extract a Russian weapons specialist. The mission turns into a catastrophic failure when Snake's former mentor, The Boss, defects to Russia and sets a nuke. Now alone and defenseless Snake must stop The Boss and her squad of crack special ops from unleashing nuclear war! Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. As per the title, it is the third installment in the "Metal Gear Solid" franchise, and actually the sixth installment in the entire "Metal Gear" franchise as a whole. However, strangely enough, this game predates every other game chronologically by about 40 years.<br/><br/>In the game, you assume the role of "Naked Snake", who looks, acts, and sounds exactly like Solid Snake from previous titles (A mystery that remains unsolved until the final minutes of the game). Since this website is for movies, and not for games, let's forgo the awesome game play and focus on the awesome story.<br/><br/>Basically, the game starts out with Snake being deployed in the fictional Tselinoyarsk, Russia, on what you at first believe is a simple rescue mission. This belief is quickly punched in the face, beaten to death, shot in the eyes, and then urinated on. Throughout the game, the story unfolds at a very manageable pace, with very endearing characters, and twists abound that will keep you guessing until the very end.<br/><br/>And what an end it is! At last, after hours of game play, you figure out the strange time conundrum; The entire time you've been playing as Big Boss, Solid Snake's genetic father! He who was at one time painted a villain on a nuclear scale is redrawn. You get to know the character and feel for him, and most of all, the ending cutscene slaps you in the face and makes it abundantly clear why Big Boss goes on to do what he did. If you think this story is anything short of fantastic, you have a very short attention span. As we all know, hype is a double edged sword, and this was one of the most hyped games of the year. It does not disappoint. The game is everything I was hoping for and more. Beautiful environments, smooth gameplay, and interesting story. Of course, if you have played the demo, you will notice they throw a couple of changes in to the opening sequence. You haven't even started to play and they are messing with you mind.<br/><br/>The loading time is shorter, the controls are better, and the whole cure system adds a new element to the game. Also, the whole environment can either be your ally or your enemy. There are so many options on how to proceed, I am sure that many gamers will have a very different gaming experience than others.<br/><br/>Anyway, if you are new to the metal gear series or still reeling from the perceived disappointment of MGS2, this game will make you a true fan.<br/><br/>This is what Metal Gear games are supposed to be like.
